Google’s war on links is about to open up a new front with the impending launch of Penguin 3.0 and to help you prepare we’ve created a cheat sheet to guide you through the melee.

With confirmation from the Google camp that the link-quality based filter will refresh ‘within weeks’ it’s never been more important to prepare for what could be around the corner.

The good news is that officials at the search giant say the next Penguin will ‘delight’ lots of site owners, the majority of which have been waiting more than a year now to see recovery from any link removal efforts they have completed.

And there are many, many examples of brands being hit hard. One of the most prominent of those was IceLolly.com, a growing business hit hard by tactics employed by those employed to improve it’s organic search visibility.

As you can see from the chart below they were hit really hard losing over 70% of their search visibility and have had no opportunity to recover, yet.

We can see from their new vs. lost links picture that like thousands of other businesses they have been working hard at manually removing a lot of links from their profile. Penguin 3 will finally allow that work to be recognized.

penalty link removalSpeaking at SMX East late last month Gary Illyes, a Google Webmaster Trends Analyst and Search Quality Engineer, explained that this next roll out is not just a refresh, but a whole re-write of the algorithm, which will be even better at spotting unnatural linking behavior.
