Google Fresher Update – Its Affect on Recency and Reputation

google fresher updateGoogle’s search algorithm engineers have not had a lot of sleep recently that’s for sure. Hot on the heels of the now infamous Google panda updates, comes one of its biggest changes yet to the way the search giant ranks results.

Say hello to the Google Fresher – a lean, mean algorithm machine designed to hunt out the very latest articles, videos products and other content and promote it to the highest eschelons of search.

For those great at producing authoratative content and updating their sites on a regular basis this is very good news indeed. It means those heavily linked to results for products, people and other high traffic terms that seem stuck to the top of the rankings may not be for much longer because GoogleBot is hungry – and it is now on a little and often diet as opposed to a glutonus once-every-blue-moon banquette.

The new algorithm has been built on Google’s December 2010 Caffeine infrastructure which gave the ecosystem the ability to index and reindex much faster. Fresher is therefore the next step in that quest and Google’s first attempt at classifying different verticals and searches based on the importance of recency. It means that NEW CONTENT WILL BE EVEN BETTER REWARDED.

Some Fresher Examples

The best way of getting your head around the changes is to appreciate the differences between a search that wouldn’t be affected by the Fresher change and one that is.

So, say you’re on the hunt for the best iPad case. Often the Amazons and other omnipresent retailers will be right at the top of the pile, waiting to lure you in with a small selection of the MOST POPULAR covers around. It’s there because Google loves Amazon and in turn we buy trailers full of goods from the site, but that’s not to say something new, something better out there hasn’t been invented. In this instance Google SHOULD now allow more innovative products to gain visibility based on recency as opposed to overall reputation of the site it sits on.

We’ve all been there, struggling to choose from the four or five different offerings those top three or four sites offer and you soon realise that search engines suck in this space. There has to be a better way of surfacing better products and Fresher is the first step in trying to achieve this.

The same could be true of any product that may have numerous iterations such as in the gadget, automotive and leisure gear markets as well as the obvious news and information channels (hence why one in every three searches is affected).

But what of those searches for which recency is not so much of a factor? Such as when you’re searching for the very best antique cut crystal glasses or quality log store.  Its here that the Fresher algorithms’ ability shines through as it will avoid tinkering with these verticals, leaving them instead to its other algo filters based more on reputation.

What does it all Mean

For the site owner it makes one thing very clear: If you haven’t already you had better get your content strategy in order asap because either Panda or Fresh is going to hurt you if you don’t.

But it also presents just as much of an opportunity as it does a threat because it means that with the right content and product strategy you have a MUCH better chance of gaining some business changing visibility. Fresh really is the incentive we’ve all been waiting for to get writing again…

A Zazzle Beginner’s Guide to SEO: Part III

Determining Your SEO Objectives

SEOIn the latest installment of my Beginner’s Guide to SEO, I’m going to talk you through how to target your website at the right people, and also how to hit the targets you set for the site.

With SEO, the most successful sites are those that appreciate that results won’t come overnight, that it’s a Test match, not a Twenty20. For those who accept the challenges of this war of attrition, you will be rewarded handsomely with a combination of steady and dramatic improvements to the ranking and overall success of your website.

Each campaign is unique; you don’t pay for a “silver package” and get the same strategy as the other companies on the same deal. You might pay the same amount for it, but you’ll get services tailor-made for your brand. As search engines evolve and bring out new algorithm updates such as Panda from Google, those working in SEO cannot rest on their laurels – trust me! More

Digital Marketing Roundup June

Google+ social networkOooph. That was quite some month that was. We are talking about June 2011 of course and the feast of new services, algorithm changes and general digi marketing feast that was the last 30 days. And boy did we enjoy it.

So where to start with this month’s roundup of news? The only place you really can start is with Google’s announcement that it is trying (once again) to tackle the elephant-in-the-room that is Facebook and social media.

While access is limited at present the initial feedback from across the globe is good, with many suggesting, us included, that Hangout, is the standout feature of Google+. It is basically a group video conferencing function very much in the Skype mold and as its Google its free and woven into the fabric of the network itself.

Google Testing New Results Page Designs

Google SERP Results Page designIt is a well known fact that the Google engineers like nothing more than a bit of A/B testing (as the latest Panda update proved) and it looks like they are at it again with the more eagle eyed of us spotting a variation in some SERP designs over recent days.

With so many different channels to try and present in a logical and relevant way it is making life much harder for Google. The growth in popularity of real time social media, coupled with the explosion in deal related websites and video has left the traditional search result design looking somewhat confused and cluttered in our opinion. The New Google Analytics

google analytics funnelsGoogle has been busy it seems. Not only have they been getting involved in social media, updating their algorithm around the world and other important stuff but they have also launched a beta version of the new Google Analytics.

The emphasis, it seems, is much more on user journey and for good reason – Google clearly wants to sell the value of its paid search Adwords service and by further developing tools that emphasis its impact on sales they will sell more space.

Its all good news for search marketers and website owners alike too, however, as it means we have better access to more valuable information and no more is this more obvious than within the new multi channel funnels area.

Google have worked hard on funnels this time around in a bid to make it easier to track the multitude of channels we now utilise as part of our marketing mix. So you will know exactly how you SEO, search marketing, social media, email marketing affects sales, how long the average purchase cycle takes etc etc.

The idea is that you can better understand not just those keywords that directly convert, but also any ‘trigger’ keywords that may also play a part in the conversion.

So, let’s say that a visitor originally visits your site via an organic keyword like ‘garden sheds’ as this is a key term for you. On that visit they do not purchase but then may come back, direct typing your web address before buying. On the surface this may look like a conversion via direct traffic source but in reality it was probably triggered by the organic keyword. The visitor just decided to come back later in a different way.

Having this level of transparency can really help us fine tune the marketing mix, ensuring that time and money is spent on the areas with the very best return on investment.

For those interested Google has produced this video explaining how the new funnel tools work:

Google Site Speed SEO Update for UK

If you are a regular reader of our SEO blog (and apologies for the lack of updates recently!) you will know how we bang on, passionately, about how important refreshing your site is. Google loves a site own that does this. So much so, it seems, that they have decided to add site speed to the ever-growing list of algorthim facets.

Google talks about speed constantly in the context of Web page loading and JavaScript execution and it is all because site speed does have an effect on how the user enjoys the experience of visiting your site. SLOOOWWWW means you are very likely to ‘bounce’ out of the site and find something better.

Sites that fail to optimize for fast loading now face a greater likelihood of ranking lower on Google search results pages too as Google has decided to finally start punishing those developers that have not got their houses, or hosting in order!

However, Google says that the speed signal does not carry as much weight as a page’s relevance and notes that less than 1% of search queries are affected by the change.

Google’s principal engineer Matt Cutts explained: “Faster sites create happy users and we’ve seen in our internal studies that when a site responds slowly, visitors spend less time there. But faster sites don’t just improve user experience; recent data shows that improving site speed also reduces operating costs. Like us, our users place a lot of value in speed — that’s why we’ve decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings.”

So there you have it…another little thing to think about when it comes to pushing that site of yours up the rankings…
