SEO is not as easy as it used to be, everything we do as SEO's is now much more complex but that doesn't mean we should overlook the simple things.
Google's recent redesign within the SERPS shows us that meta tags are still important as there is now much more room in descriptions and titles. Title tags can now be up to 70 characters and the descriptions up to 160 characters. It's good to remember that these character limits are not always the same, there are some variations with different queries.
Meta titles and descriptions are a way in which you can show search engines and users what the page is about and importantly why they should visit. Make sure you make the most of your meta tags, you should try to include relevant keywords and call to actions to make sure you don't miss out on organic traffic.
